Starting Herb Garden -- What You Need to Know
![]() |
Do you want to grow your own herbs? If so, there are some things you need to know. Starting herb garden can be a fun and relaxing hobby. It is possible to grow a variety of herbs both indoors and out. One of the best things about growing herbs is that they are useful. They are not just pretty to look at, but can be harvested and used for a variety of purposes. With this in mind, your first step is to choose what kind of herbs you want to grow.
You definitely want to stick to herbs that need the same growing conditions. For example, you want to keep herbs that like full sun close together and herbs that like shade close together. Most herbs will grow just fine in moderate to abundant sunlight. While most herbs grow best when the soil is kept moist but not overwatered, some do not require quite as much moisture as others. You may want to do some research on growing various herbs to find out which ones are good to put together. One top title on the subject of herb gardening is The Herb Garden by Sarah Garland.
Many gardeners prefer to start their herbs from seed. Starting seeds is easy, you just need the right supplies. Mini greenhouses are ideal for germination purposes. You can buy plastic seed starting kits that come with mini compartments which are to be filled with potting soil. The plastic container is snapped shut, which locks in more heat and moisture than growing without such a container. Seed starting kits are inexpensive and sometimes even come with the seeds and soil. You can buy these kits anywhere garden supplies are sold.
Starting herb garden is easiest when you use a kit. You will find plenty of these kits on the market for under $20. They contain the seeds, soil, seed starting compartments and/or small seed pots, and growing instructions. Many kits have a theme. For example, you might find an Italian cooking herb garden kit, a tea herb garden kit or even a cat lover's herb garden complete with catnip. Growing your own herbs has never been easier, more affordable or more convenient. You can grow your herbs indoors in a sunny window or transplant them outside when they are big enough.
