The Benefits of a Small Herb Garden

Herbs are plants that are grown for culinary, fragrance and medicinal use. They can be shrubs or non-woody plants. Some grow quite large, while others are rather small. Herbs are among the most popular plants for gardeners because they can be grown indoors, outdoors, in a large space, or in a small space. There are quite a few benefits of a small herb garden that you will enjoy. The first benefit of a smaller sized garden is cost. Growing herbs in a small garden is quite affordable especially if you start from seed.

Germinating seeds is fast and easy when you use a miniature greenhouse. You may have seen these seed starting kits at your local garden center. They are clear and can be snapped closed. The plastic helps trap heat and moisture and encourages the seeds to sprout faster than they would if they were not enclosed. One old fashioned, economical method of germinating seeds is to wrap them in a wet paper towel until they sprout, then move them to the soil.

Another benefit is that you can grow many herbs indoors. A great many herb gardeners enjoy what is called the kitchen garden. For example, when you stand next to your culinary garden you will smell the various aromas of the kitchen herbs, blending together to make a delightful bouquet of fragrance. If you enjoy the scent of various herbs, you can dry them and make your own scented sachets or even potpourri.

As you can see, the small herb garden is a wonderful way to get into the world of growing herbs. You can always expand your garden in the future if you obtain more space. Herbs can be grown in containers or in an outdoor garden area. Most of them are quite durable and can be transplanted from place to place as necessary.
