How to Grow an Herb Garden

Anyone can learn how to grow an herb garden. Herbs are some of the easiest, hardiest and most useful plants to grow. They are beautiful, fragrant and can be used in a variety of ways. They are used to make supplements and alternative medicines, they are used for flavoring food and beverages, they are used for soothing teas and they are used to scent a variety of products such as soap, lotion and candles. Herbs aren't just for looks. You can grow them, harvest them and use them for different things. Some herbs are shrubs and some are non-woody plants. Some have blossoms and others do not.

There are so many different herbs to grow you may want to read some books to find out the growing conditions, appearance and use of various herbs. By finding out more about the many herbs available you can decide which ones you want to include in your garden. One good title is Your Backyard Herb Garden: A Gardener's Guide to Growing Over 50 Herbs Plus How to Use Them in Cooking, Crafts, Companion Planting and More by Miranda Smith. At your local bookstore or library you can also find a great many titles from which to choose.

Many people prefer using a do-it-yourself kit that comes with everything you need to start an herb garden. You will find different brands and varieties. For example, you may find a kitchen garden kit which contains sage, mint, rosemary, oregano and other culinary herbs. Or, you may find a tea garden which has mint, chamomile, sage and lemongrass. There are even gardening kits for cat lovers that contain cat friendly herbs like catmint and catnip. Cats also like grasses like barley and rye.

These kits will show you how to grow an herb garden from start to finish. They contain the growing pots, seeds, full instructions and often the soil as well. You may be able to leave your herbs in the container that came with the kit, or you may want to transplant your mature herbs into a larger container. You can even move your herbs into your outdoor garden if you like. The great majority of herbs require lots of sunlight and moisture. Whether you use a kit or start your garden on your own, you will surely enjoy growing herbs.
