Why You Should Plant an Herb Container Garden
![]() |
Container gardening is popular for many reasons. One reason is space. Even gardeners with little or no yard space can have a gorgeous container garden. Container gardens are perfect for porches, patios, small yards, balconies and other small areas. One of the best types of garden is the herb container garden. Herbs are plants that are grown for their useful properties. Many herbs are used for cooking, fragrance or even medicine. Herbal tea is a common use of herbs as well. Many herbs grow very well in containers. Your garden can be large or small depending on your needs and preferences.
For example, you've probably seen the little herb gardening kits on the market today. They are made by brands like Chia, Burpee and even Martha Stewart. The kits are enclosed in a clear plastic case that serves as a seed starting greenhouse. In the kits you will find instructions, containers, seeds and often potting soil or other growing medium. Some kits have a theme. A culinary herb garden is a popular example of a theme. Another example would be a tea garden. As its name suggests, the herbs featured would be used to make tea.
Herbs are perfect for containers because they are quite easy to grow. When starting from seed, go for small containers and use a plastic cover for retaining heat and moisture. Seeds can also be germinated by placing them inside a wet, folded paper towel. Many gardeners like to use organic potting soil and compost for fertilizer. An organic herb garden is ideal because you know that the herbs you are using for food and tea have not been exposed to harmful chemicals.
Your herb container garden can be large or small. Large container gardens are best kept outdoors in a sunny spot. You can place different herbs in the same container as long as they require the same growing conditions. The only exception is mint. Mint should be contained by itself because it will quickly take over a container. For a small herb garden, try growing culinary herbs in a sunny windowsill. Having your fresh herbs in the kitchen makes it convenient to use them. Once you try fresh herbs you've grown yourself, you'll never want to buy them from the store again. There's no doubt that herb container gardening is fun, relaxing and can really pay off!

The Weekend Gardener: Sometimes, it's better to take the path of least resistance (Fort Worth Star-Telegram) By CATHERINE MALLETTE What I really wanted was a garden path. A couple of years ago, Id had a patch of land in our back yard tilled into a garden, and it had been a long, slow process to figure out what the layout of that patch should be. The fact is that it wasnt so much of a process as a rambling. A process implies a deliberate plan, and for this stretch of land, I had none. What really ... | |
