Planning a Design for a Small Herb Garden
![]() |
Herbs are great for those with limited space. You don't need much space to have your very own herb garden. As a matter of fact, you can even grow a beautiful and functional herb garden in a sunny windowsill. Planning a design for a small herb garden is fun and simple. First, decide what kind of herbs you want to grow. If you want to grow your herbs inside, go for cooking herbs like sage, rosemary, basil, and chives. If you have a spot outside that you want to use, you can grow tall, stately herbs like lavender and spearmint.
Most herbs require lots of sunlight, which means you can group them close together. You should definitely refer to the back of your seed packet to learn when to plant the seeds and what kind of growing conditions they require. Starting seeds is best done indoors, in a miniature plastic greenhouse. Once the seeds are sturdy sprouts, they can be transplanted outdoors if that is where you want them to be. If you are keeping them indoors, just move them to a larger container when they outgrow their seedling container.
You don't have to have a specific design in mind when planting an herb garden. You can simply place the herbs next to one another, making sure each has enough room to grow and take root. Of course, some people do like to arrange their herbs in a design. Container gardening makes it easy to move your plants around and arrange them however you like. If you are gardening outdoors, you may want to design your garden according to height. Some gardeners even plant their herbs to grow in a particular shape.
Of course, if you've only got a limited amount of space you probably don't want anything too intricate. Planning a design for a small herb garden is usually a matter of placing your preferred herbs in containers or planting them side by side. You might have more than one herb garden area. Place sun loving plants together and shade loving plants together for the best results. With some creativity and gardening know-how, you can create a beautiful and functional herb garden even if you have a small amount of space. You will find herbs to be some of the easiest and most rewarding plants to grow.
